SG Deep Cuts: Close Encounters of the Bird Kind

Original post date: 8/26/05

I love wildlife. Especially predators, as readers of my
earlier posts have discovered (Furball is still missing, by the way---big surprise---according to some newly-updated posters all over town).

But there's wildlife and there's wildlife, ya know?

Some wildlife is best observed from afar.

In the spring, all sorts of critters emerge from their winter naps and come into my house in droves. I don't know how they get in; is there some giant crack somewhere that I don't know about?

This past May, my roommate A. (A for Anyhoo) and I battled: Wasps, Carpenter Bees, Millipedes, and Spiders. I like the hymenopterae from a distance (not so much when their stingers are engrafted in my foot), but millipedes creep me out (have you noticed that they smell?) and spiders haunt my darkest night-time imaginings.

I broke my own Cardinal Rule yesterday and killed a spider. I know, I know, it's a predator, never kill a predator... but this one was huge (it was one of those big hairy brown ones like
the one I saw on my house in July) and fast-moving. It was flitting all around my wall and the adjoining exposed beam, then finally slipped into a crack. I sprayed it with poison, and it emerged, feebly, to fall from the beam directly onto my paper shredder, where it crawled into the infeed opening. I'm not going to tell you what happened later...when I had a stack of old bills to destroy... let's just say that Little Miss Muffet has nothing left to worry about.

My best wildlife encounter story (to date) involves a Turkey Vulture.

Cathartis aura

I love birds of prey; particularly hawks, owls, eagles, and osprey. I am always on the lookout for birds in flight, and I can be seen craning my neck to gaze skyward as I drive (other motorists love me). Now, technically, the Turkey Vulture is a raptor, even though strictly a carrion-eater.

In the summer of 2002, as I was driving along at a good clip (55 or so on a back country road) and saw a T.V. circling low to the road, I was excited to watch it land on its meal. Usually, I just see them overhead or already on the ground (looking like turkeys...heyyyyyyyyyyyy, is that how they get their name?!?!?).

I watched the vulture dive across the road directly in front of me, maybe 30 feet away.

My last though before impact was, "Wow! Turkey Vulture -- up close!"

In the next instant, the T.V. made a last-minute 180-degree turn, heading directly towards my (open) driver's-side window. I had no time to do anything but brake a bit, and I hit him with the top left corner of my windshield and driver's-side doorjamb. One wing came sweeping into the window and hit me in the cheek and mouth; the bird flipped up & over the hood of my car and was left, flapping one wing (and hopefully dying a quick death) on the road behind me. Later, he would most likely be consumed by his brethren.

The smell that came in with that wing, and the taste that was left in my mouth, can only be described as maggot-infested rendering plant. It was a stench unlike anything I have ever experienced before or since.

Since this incident, I never drive with my window all the way down. A split second later and this gigantic, panicked, rotten-carcass-eating bird would have been in my ear, then my lap.

My run-ins with Mother Nature haven't deterred me from seeking out opportunities to discover her hidden beauty; only in her embrace (swarm of gnats, webs across my porch, a slick of goose shit) do I feel completely alive and utterly whole.

Feathered Beauty is Everwhere. Only Open Your Eyes!

I spot hawks all the time, daily, but I think it is only because I have trained my eyes to the shape of them. My ears, to the sound of them. Listen for the high-pitched cry, or for crows, with their endless mobbing. Seek the silhouette on the lone high branch; watch for enormous flapping wings of tan, and you will see what I see:

This red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) was spotted over a parking lot one day when I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond. I heard the familiar harassing caw of crows, looked, and there she was.

This next spotting was on my own street, this afternoon. She flew directly in front of my car, squirrel dangling from talons (sweet!) and landed on a low branch. I snuck up on her with my car and took these from the window; if I had gotten out, I'm sure she would have flown. They don't like being watched.

Isn't it amazing what you can see when you know how to look?

Bow before me, lesser peoples!

Yes! My short story about a Peregrine Falcon (Arrow) has been published by HawkWatch International. See? This is almost as exciting as when Ranger Rick published my letter about a weasel (1976).

Nuggets (a.k.a. imitation = obsession flattery)

My cat-fur LOVAH did a post called nuggets, and since I love her so much, and I am a copycat, I thought I would do nuggets too.

It is very important to me that you all love me, unconditionally if at all possible, and embracing my numerous flaws ... and also that I get my counter up to 100,000 before Christmas. Please help me by posting your comments one word (or preferably one letter) at a time. I remember when I was at 10,000 hits, and look at me now! Bitchez!!!!

What could be cuter than my kids all sitting & reading the Science Times? I let them put their feet up so they would feel more relaxed (also for a yearbook photo).

I have often wondered why doves are always in such a freaking panic. Everyday on my walk, if I startle a dove, it's always like "twuh twuh twuh twuh twuuuuuh!" and flies away as if the devil himself was after him. I don't even eat doves, you freak! Why can't you just hop away, like a crow? Crows are annoying, but at least they aren't fucktards like doves.

I get a little bit personal about birds. Sorry. I love them. Unlike some people. One of my blog-pals hit an eagle with his car (by accident of course) the other day and I am still upset over it. I am starting to wonder if it was really an eagle. Could it have been a hawk (still bad) or a vulture (no biggie there)? I want to ask him but I don't want to obsess on it, since that's not what the post was really about. Maybe you can tell me by email. You know who you aaaaaare.

Every Christmas I have written a letter, and they have always been a great creative outlet for me, but last year I didn't do one because all my creative juices get smeared all over the internets. I want to do one this year, but need to get inspired. I don't have a 4-year-old's soccer exploits to brag about!

They so do. As do Chem geeks.

Which brings me to the fact that I have a mini crush on my friend Miko; kind of a big one, actually. Do you think it would enhance our friendship if I whipped out my boobies when I see him this weekend? I did the cross-over friend thing once, with Neighb, and it didn't work out. If it did work out, though, how great that would be! I find I often let my heart lead me into bad decisions (right, assmuppet?) and then I have regrets. But I also believe one should "Leap, and the net appears." So maybe I should leap on Miko.

Repost Time: Flash Fiction Friday

While I am rejuvenating, here is a repost of a story I wrote a while back.

Arrow

In the purple and gray morning, I release the small leather ball from my slingshot into the brisk breeze above my head. Fine hairs waft around my eyelashes as I watch it climb to almost disappear from view, trailing its cargo of sewn-on feathers and tiny little bell.

A bullet of black and white and brown streaks from the sky above and grabs the ball, makes a wide circle and settles, fluffed and agitated, on my wrist. I stroke the feathers beneath her dark amber eye with the knuckle of my index finger, crooning words of praise and beauty. I bend my face to the crown of her head and inhale her wild, dusty smell. She is fierce, she is hungry, she is Peregrine, and she is mine.

On these exercise mornings I think about how, long ago, I came across her path and saved her life. She came into
Wind Over Wings damaged and emaciated, wounded by some collision or perhaps a projectile, a carelessly thrown rock. I doubt that, she is too fast … perhaps in pursuit of a smaller bird, she did not see the approaching car? I'll never know. On the long days of healing, her wing splinted and her feathers dirty with her own filth, I would peer into her eyes and will her to speak. Tell me, tell me what it was.

As she mended and we began our rehabilitation work together, a trust grew that has us in its tethers now, bound to one another inextricably. She cannot be released to the wild; this would surely be a death sentence, as she is hobbled on the one side and too accustomed to people to keep herself safe from them and their ignorant impulses. Besides, I could not bear to let a day pass without the guidance of her bird wisdom. She is self-reliant, noble, wild at heart, unapologetic. She is everything that I would like to be.

I prepare the lure for another flight, reflecting upon the illness that courses through my own bloodstream, threatening to consume my body from the inside out. Two treatments left and then maybe a clean bill of health? There’s no way of knowing. I cling to the hope that these outings of fresh air and exercise will imbue my body with just enough positivity to tip the scales in my favor. Maybe if I hang my soul from the talons of this little beast, she can carry my hopes towards the heavens and release them, there to diffuse and to shower life down upon me.

I chuckle at my sad attempts to bring poetic meaning to this ritual, the morning flight-runs that keep my bird strong and allow me to breathe the cold, new air. Still, perhaps there is just a little magic in this bond and in these moments. Enough to keep me happy, surely, and perhaps enough to heal me.

The target prepared and my falcon circling above my head, I pull the band of my slingshot back once more, aiming for the rising sun. I stretch the band to its limit, holding the ball in its leather cup as I glance at the bird, climbing in her anticipation. Pulling the band just a bit further I release, and watch as she pursues her quarry. Ah, beautiful, beautiful. Beautiful, beautiful bird, my mind whispers.

The light in the east fills out the horizon just as she dives, a feathered arrow of hope, into the blue and silent sunrise.

In this
Flash Fiction Friday, the task was to write a story beginning with "In the purple and gray morning..."

The Down & Dirty Blog Frolic (I): My Ass is on Fire!

You may remember that a while back, I asked you to put me in the Hot Seat and ask me questions. Well, you delivered! Pull up a chair, it's a long one.

The Spinning Girl Interview

miss kendra said...
Q: are you hurt-- you know, from falling down from heaven?
Q: is that Windex in your pocket? because I see myself in your pants.
Q: if I had a big important party and invited you and gave you ample notice, would you attend?
A: The first time I tried to fly I took a running start, lifted my feet, & landed in a raspberry bush and scratched myself something terrible. Sometimes I carry rocks around in my pockets because I like to suck them for the salty taste. I can see you in my pants, too. What are you doing after? I would totally come to your party, especially if I can wear a gigantic puffy bridesmaid dress. Oh, I'm not saying it's your wedding, I just like to dress like that. With a bonnet and big sheep hook, maybe some adult-sized diapers if it's Sunday.

BadGod said...
Q: Ever licked any snatch?
Q: And what did you think of the total bullshit ending to the Dark Tower series?
A: I never lick and tell, but I will say that the new Edy's lo-fat creamsicle is the closest I've come to heaven. Can I go for a ride in your truck? Oh, and don't get me started on the Dark Tower debacle. Did he just run out of story all of a sudden? Here I was waiting for that book to change my life. Instead, I'm stuck in a bad Twilight Zone ending ... the ending that never ends. Darn you, Stephen King! Darn you to heck!

miss kendra said...
I have more questions, but I need more people to respond first.
Q: also, how serious can this get?
A: Just don't make me cry like you did last time.

Weary Hag said...
Q: When you were a very little girl, did someone repeatedly smack you over the head with a bear dressed in costume? Just wonderin.
A: Actually, my obsession with TBDOA did not begin until July of 2005, when I became a blogger. I tend to obsess about things in series, then forget about them. Other things that have held my obsessive attention: Adult women in baby bonnets, licorice, certain bloggers (yourself included, of course), Absolut Mandarin, Uruguayan cigarettes, Estonian songs, and the constellations. That's the short list. Also, have you actually looked at the teddy bears' faces? They are suffering!

Q: With your incredible spinning talents, is there any way that you can rearrange the alphabet so that I could be next to u? (following miss kendra's lead there) PS - two incredibly difficult lower case L's in my word verif today.
A: I wrote an email to
dictionary.com, but I got this stock answer:
Dear Ms. Girl,
Thank you for your query. We will process your email and a representative will respond to you within 72 hours. Due to the volume of mail that we receive, we cannot guarantee a personal response unless your question is one that needs to be handled by one of our knowledgeable members in the research department.

Q: Boxers or briefs?
A: Yes.

tits mcgee said...
Q: Are those space pants you're wearing? Because your ass is out of this world.
A: It has its own weather system.

gracie said...
Q: did you eat lucky charms for breakfast? because you're looking magically delicious.
A: I'm fun for a girl and a boy.

LBseahag said...
Q: What's more important- length or girth?
A: For this answer, I must draw upon my vast athletic background. I would say that in the pole vault, length is key. In the balance beam, a little extra girth makes all the difference. Of course, in surfing, one depends solely upon the motion of the ocean.

Q: OK, this might seem odd (even for me), but you know that song "Sunny Came Home"? Yes? Great......what the fuck is that song about? I mean this chick named "Sunny" comes home and sits in the kitchen with a book and some tools and a vengeance and shit, right? Then there is this "dry is good and wind is better and counting and then striking matches and shit"...What the fuck!? Then shit's burning down and she's alright? Huh? This song won awards and shit? I am usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out, but I am at a loss every time I hear this lyrical mumbo-jumbo.
A: I have thought about this question long and hard (see above). I think she is pissed off, and comes home and sets a big fire, then grabs the kids, a sweater, a book, and her keys, and goes out for sushi.

Q: What would you do if you won 20 million in the lottery?
A: Of course, I would blog about it. Duh!

MadMeer said...
Q: Do you ever listen to a song and, instead of singing the real words, make up your own? And are those words sometimes not even words, but sounds that you make up to fill in the empty spaces of the song so you can fit more singing in?
A: Here are some of my favorite examples:
1. (Macy Gray--I Try) I try to say goodbye and I choke; Try to walk away and I stumble; Though I try to hide it, its clear; I wear goggles when you are not here!
2. (CCR- Lodi) Just about a year ago, I set out on the road, Seekin' my fame and fortune, lookin' for a pot of gold. Things got bad, and things got worse, I guess you will know the tune. Oh Lord, Stuck in Old Diane.
3. (Elton John--Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) What do you think you'll do then? I bet that'll shoot down your plane; It'll take you a couple of accurate townies, To set you on your feet again.
I smell a blog post! Do you?

Q: My question: could you strip bare and expose yourself to me?
Q: Who would you rather do: Newton, Hawking or Gauss?
A: You are, of course, talking about a spiritual stripping. I am yours to devour. As for the geniuses, I assume by "do" you are using a slang term meaning "style one's hair", so in that case I choose Hawking, since he has trouble getting his arms up there.

Q: Silly question: Have you ever been naked in Toledo?
Q: Not so silly question: Why are you not writing more fiction and/or poetry? (Or if you are, where is it?)
A: No, but I have been fully dressed in Cedar Rapids, and that's nothin' to sneeze at. As for the fiction, I just haven't had the mental energy. It is rather hard for me to write fiction; I am much better at the semi-truthful anecdote. I hope to explore my fiction side this summer when I have more time (the 8th graders and their needs have sucked all my teats dry, but I should be fully replenished in a week or so). I'll start by rejoining Purgatorian's Flash Fiction Friday.

Q: Scariest moment ever (you know, sweaty palms, racing heart, etc.)?
Q: Did you always want to be a teacher? When was the defining moment?
Q: I remember reading, months back, something about you suddenly discovering you had the most fabulous hair in the universe. I'm hoping this happens to me, too. I'd even be happy with second most fabulous hair in the universe. Any advice to get me there sooner than later? Tips? Or, just tell the story again! Please!
A: I don't think I have ever been fully terrified. My mind did snap when I rode the Millennium Force, and I was petrified, but knew I was safe. I felt like the world dropped out from under me on September 11, 2001.
A: I remember saying I wanted to be an English teacher back in 7th grade, but I went to school for physical therapy. When I got wait-listed for the school of PT at UConn, I had to make a decision, and I decided to teach; I had always wanted to teach PT, anyhow, and my mom talked me into trying it, as she is a teacher too. I am so glad she did!
A: As for the hair, I am afraid to give you tips, for I do not want to compete with you in the fabu hair department (I already have some pretty stiff competition). But I will say the following:

1. Highlights.
2. No perms, not ever.
3. Hot rollers
4.
Aveda Elixir

Q: You're still on vacation? Jeez, are you from Europe or something?
Q: OK, another one. Have you ever written something and destroyed it (torn it up, deleted it, whatever) because it was something you never wanted anyone else to read? If so, what was it about?
A: Maine is in Europe, right? Felt like it, anyway. [EDIT: Even after reading Freewheel's question 7 times, and writing a reply, I never realized he said "from Europe". I thought he said "in Europe". So the answer to that question is yes; I model myself after the Swedes in my love of both vacations and salted fish.]
A: I haven't torn up any of my writing, but I do post it on my other top-secret blog so that it's out there for people to read, & then suggest medications for me. If I don't want anyone to read something, I don't write it. You should hear the ranting in my pre-sobriety journals. After I croak, someone is going to get a kick out of deciphering that noise.

miss kendra said...
Q: what was it that made you go to the doctor and find out you had MS?
Q: have you ever engaged in inappropriate behaviors with someone who was otherwise involved?
A: I went to the neurologist because my feet were numb, and as much as I tried to ignore it, I knew there had to be some underlying cause. An MRI revealed "spots" on my brain (sclera) and then a spinal tap (the most fun you can have with a needle!) confirmed MS-related proteins in my cerebrospinal fluid. After the foot numbness went away, I experienced no further symptoms, and am hoping I can hang out in this place for a while. Sometimes I get little pins-and-needles sensations all over my body, but I think it's just because I am thinking about me, Jiggs, BadGod, and Jamwall sharing a special moment in the ball pit.

A: Inappropriate? Hmmm. Is it inappropriate to break a 4-poster bed? No? OK, let me think. Does a common-law wife count? How about an extremely close, nosy neighbor? No? Hmmm. OK, then the answer to your question is no.

jamwall said...
Q: Crisco or Velveeta? and should I use a flyswatter next time?
A: I'm sorry I was bad.

Bill said...
Q: I have another question: where are my pants? Thank you.
A: Are you still looking for those? That was weeks ago. Here, I had them dry-cleaned. The ruffles got a little bit worn by the dry-cleaning fluid, but they're still pretty.

Bill said...
Q: My last question, about the pants, was kind of stupid. So you can ignore that one. Here's one that's a bit more of a puzzler - requires more work. Actually, it is a two-parter:
1) What is happiness?
2) What makes you happy?
3) Why does water always sound good?
(Okay, I threw in that last one as a freebie. I'll even answer it: because it's water.)
A: I liked the pants question. Now you are making me work!
1) That's easy. Happiness exists in all the places where the soul is in contact with the universe.
2) The symphony. Iced tea. Loving friends. People I can rely on. A belly-laugh. Feeling needed. The cry of a hawk in a crisp, clear morning. The first snow. Harley noise. Avocados. Coyotes. Suzanne Vega. A fresh-picked apple or tomato. Peas straight from the pod. Windy weather. Sisters. Feather comforters. Shall I go on?
3) Because it knows it is water.

Q: What would you be doing for a living if you weren't a teacher?
Q: And now a silly one: If they were making a TV sitcom about your life, who would be cast in the starring role?
Q: Bonus points for rounding out the supporting actors and wacky next door neighbors.
A: I would do stand-up comedy, assuming I was already established & didn't have to work too hard to make a name for myself. In my TV sitcom life, I would be a blend of Margaret Cho and Jenna Elfman (of Dharma & Greg), 2 people I have been likened to (then again ... Mimi is also in that category). For neighbors I would definitely want the entire cast of The Office. But I don't feel like working too hard right now thinking about the storyline, I just drove home from Maine for chrissake.

BadGod said...
Q: I have one more question: What do teachers do all summer?
A: Some teach summer school, some travel, work other jobs, write, enjoy their kids. This particular teacher hangs out at the pool, reads, takes short trips, writes, blogs, and tries to decompress. This summer I am also going to choir camp (yes it is true!) and moving my shit into a new house.

Q: Ever had a pillow fight that went too far? (or not far enough?) Ok, so that's two more. Whatever.
A: As in nosebleed far? Yes. Not far enough, as in no broken leg? Yes.

Slyde said...
Q: I WANT to ask something, but I can't think of anything that isn't dirty......
A: That's because you are bad. Come here. Momma's gonna spank the bad boy.

Q: If I was hairy, would I still be allowed on the pigpile?
Q: I think I failed you, do you still love me?
Q: Have you ever dated anyone as smart as you?
A: Ummm, I thought you were hairy. You're not? Hmmm, I need to reconsider my PP criteria.
A: In what way have you failed me? Better not tell me because I haven't noticed, and I would still love you if I knew, but I would do so coolly and with a condescending gaze.
A: Yes. Most of my earlier boyfriends were quite smart. Shepherd Boy was a genius. Recently, I have had bad luck in this arena of my life. For some reason, I allow my time to be wasted by some pretty big losers.

Juliabohemian said...
Q: How come you are still single when you are clearly intelligent and sexy?
A: Because I am holding out for Absolutely Extraordinary. Is that too much to ask?

BadGod said...
Q: One more question.... If Darth Vader was holding you hostage and had the Death Star pointed at earth.........would you give up the location of the rebel base, knowing that he was gonna destroy earth anyway? Or would you lie about the location of the rebel base.....wait a minute......he's gonna blow up earth anyway!
Thanks for nothing Spin Girl.
A: I would probably invite DV in and ask him to explore his chakras to find out where he is harboring his negative energy, then give a cleansing green-tea body-mask. He'll be the one thanking me when he finds himself rejuvenated, refreshed, and deeply soothed.

Q: Um.. two days left till or of what? Just wondering..
A: I don't understand what the hell you just said.

Q: Who loves ya, baby?
A: Is this a trick question? You're not trying to turn me on to Jesus, are you? OK then.

Ricardo Montalbán said...
Q: What I would like to know, dear Spinning Girl, is where you have been all my life. And also how you learned to do that thing with your tongue.
A: When you were sporting that chest plate in Khan, I was sitting right in front of you ... one hand jamming popcorn past my headgear and the other fiddling around inside my halter top. Didn't you see me? Also, the tongue thing is genetic, if you remember your 9th grade biology.

Madge said...
Q: Did you ever want to run away as a kid?
A: I did run away. I packed a suitcase with all my Little House books, my rocks, and a T-shirt, and marched down the driveway. The suitcase got heavy at the bottom so I stuck it in the ditch and walked around the block. I was home in time for The Electric Company.

MadMeer said...
Q: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Q: Who is Paul Fusco?
Q: Under what circumstances are Hawaiian shirts ok?
Q: What is the most creative excuse you've ever used to get out of work?
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Q: Would you consider getting a tattoo of a heart with a banner wrapped around it that says "I heart Mad M?"

I'm just checking on that last one.

A: Mint Oreo.
A:
This guy?
A: When hiding in the hibiscus from a raging saber-toothed tiger
A: I once called in and said my car had been plowed in & I couldn't get out.
A: A 100-year-old lady
A: Ummm, hello, did you not get the picture of my tushie? I'll send it again.

Immortalized; Food for the Soul

I think it is almost time for me to write another Ode ... I have a few subjects in mind. No requests, please, the Muse works alone. There was a phase here at 11.5 when we wrote odes to one another. I post for you now the Ode that Fritz wrote for me, which I love, and which makes me feel better about myself at times, and which I printed out and read before sleep. Below that, my Ode to Bobi, on the occasion of him meeting Bethie, whom he adores, and who is worthy of his love. With apologies in advance for length and reposting, I now present to you ... the Odes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ODE TO SPINNING GIRL (by Fritz)

CHILD MOON

The child's wonder
At the old moon
Comes back nightly.
She points her finger
To the far silent yellow thing
Shining through the branches
Filtering on the leaves a golden sand,
Crying with her little tongue, "See the moon!"
And in her bed fading to sleep
With babblings of the moon on her little mouth
-Carl Sandburg, Chicago Poems

I preface this Ode to Spinning Girl with Carl Sandburg. He is one of my favorite poets, because he eagerly brought nature and the city together in his work. His lyric schemes are landscapes of sounds and verbs. Perhaps not a teacher in the traditional sense, Carl Sandburg and Spinning Girl are two cut from the same cloth.
And Now....(drumroll)...the Ode to Spinning Girl.

Canto I.

There is a classroom in a town in Connecticut
Where a very tall woman presides.
Her hair is like that of a moth's wing
and her nose is aligned with pride.

She talks about history or math
Or perhaps, physics and atoms.
No matter the subject she's teaching,
it's more than the students can fathom.

She's brilliant and oh-so-pretty
With eyes clear and bright with intellect.
She tells stories about lions and children
And nary a student she rejects.

Canto II.

Spinning Girl is the moniker she uses
When she dabbles with internet pleasure.
Her words are like little rubies
and her blogs are unexpected nectar.

She has readers, far and wide.
Her passion is unrelenting.
The talent she has in her little finger
Daunts my own, like a thimble.

At times, she may seem contrary
But this mood is never lasting.
Back she'll come with a comment
always funny, always witty.

Canto III.

I myself live in Georgia
With a boyfriend and a cat.
I have lots of issues
keeping thoughts intact.

But Spinning Girl is Athena
A goddess wise and fair
And when I read her blogs
I'm refreshed of my own flair.

She does this crazy stuff
with Adobe Photoshop
And lots of times I'm duped
by pictures that she's cropped.

Canto IV.

(Muse in fairy garb swings across imaginary set in my mind, changing entire mood of 'Ode to S.G.')

If there is a soul out there that nears Spinning Girl,
may that soul be bright and cheery; may that soul be
rested and unweary. May that soul
be kind enough to listen to Spinning Girl's words
and learn the immortal lessons she teaches. May that soul
be good enough to keep her safe at night.
When all the lights have burnt out, or a power surge erupts
and you and I and BOBI can no longer read her stuff,
let us pray that Spinning Girl and her ephemeral life
go on and on like Fate's three threads:
epigrammatic, ambiguous, enchanting.
Let us all remember Spinning Girl, and sing of her to children.
If every teacher taught like her,
all minds would be like fertile fields of Narnia or Elysian Lands,
or the soft light stuff that makes up heaven.

Canto V.

(A little child sings):
Thank you, God, for your bright star.
Spinning Girl, Spinning Girl, wherever you are.
Teach me now, teach me at morn
Weave me a tale
To last through all time.

(Curtain down)
(Applause).

Ode to B.O.B.I. (by Spinning Girl)

on the occasion of his birthday two and twenty

this sixteenth day of Tenmonth

in 2005 the Year of our Lord.

Song I

Beyond the lakes and the wide, wide river
in the North, in the cold
of the snowy, frozen plains
within the walls of a
spacious abode
together there live three Men.

Dane is the second
the third is Another
but then there is the One,
and that One is BOBI
he is the One of whom we sing.

Gather now, and still your noises
Silence your iPods, turn off your toyses
and listen to the tale of this One.

Song II

We speak the name of Bee-Oh-Bee-Aye
with reverence, with love of a kind
for he has chosen us as the vessels
for the magic that he pours
from his brightly blazing mind.

He speaks to us of the world of wizards and of
emus
and of drunken nightly mirth
of
Alan Rickman and Target
of the Universe and its rebirth.

His brilliant blue eyes alight
at the mention of Lord Vader
His hands and feet point directly
at a shapely, promising bubble-invader
... who primly nods and prances by
obliviously passing up
a chance at bliss unequalled
at the hands of this young suitor.

Song III

For BOBI's single quest
condoned by Gods above
is to be finally dealt a hand
that wins the game of Love.

He throws his net and hopes, and longs
and it catches, time to time
on a likely find
then comes loose and drifts again.

Night after night, day after day
he casts far and wide.
Ever the net turns up empty
ever the cupboard is bare
ever the cold desert of BOBI's bed
calls out for a soft pink soul
to warm it, and the bountiful heart that lives there.

Song IV

A Spinning Girl sits at her wheel
spinning away her days
and weaving a wondrous web on her loom
of storied threads and nostalgic ways.

One day her web catches and holds
this wandering Lancelot, this BOBI lad
He
tickles her fancy
and pokes at her mind
and awakens the sleeping Muse.

They
spar and they duel
on Middle Earth's fields
sharing fireside secrets by email
A battle of wits
and of hearts has begun
In his company, she finds
respite and sustenance for life's long travail.

In dreams he mounts his shaggy steed
A g
uanaco? Alpaca? No indeed!
No less than mighty Llama-kind
for the russet
knight-errant
when he courts his maiden fair.

(an ominous low chord sounds, and holds for entire last stanza)

But in night's dark hour
her fears and doubts
denounce his affections
she tosses her web to the wind
and BOBI flies free of her charms
to wander the world once more
heavy-hearted, yet happier, somehow.

Song V

(A chorus of soft girls' voices)

pianissimo

: O sweet wanderer
never fear, never doubt
for love will come to you. :

Song VI

What now for this knight, this knower of souls

this delver, this digger, this miner of the unkown?

This speaker of languages both real and imagined

This master of sword and of bow?

This coaxer of melodies from cello's strings

And singer of harmonies low?

BOBI will rant, and wax philosophical

about fecal bullets, and domos, and jelly

miniskirts, afros, and schooldays bygone

no topic too sacred, no topic immune.

He finds solace in a soul who lives close to his heart,

awaiting the day when One comes to his side

and climbs on Life's coaster with him

together to laugh on the dips in the ride.

Song VII: Finale

(a great and rousing chorus erupts)

Let those who are worthy and those who are strong

who've come from afar and traveled long

gather now, to BOBI and all flock about

to sing his praises in a glorious shout:

"No other so mighty, No other so true!
BOBI’s tremendous, through and through.
BOBI Majestic, we really love you!"

(curtain)
(thunderous applause)

Q: Do They Have Large Talons?

A: Yes.

I spent part of a summer in southern Wyoming, banding Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) fledglings. The purpose: to gather information on the migratory and nesting patterns of this rather skittish and elusive raptor, the largest North American hawk. All with the higher goal of protecting them against loss of nesting habitat due to manmade environmental stresses such as oil drilling, and for the purpose of educating the public about how to protect our wild creatures.

The high desert of southern Wyoming;

our survey covered an area of about a million acres.

Even though these public lands are fairly desolate,
there is still a possibility that nests will be disturbed.

Ferruginous Hawk nest on artificial nesting structure.

In addition to these,

they build on rock cliffs and on top of oil mines.

Nests are built season after season by mate pairs; they

are 15 feet in the air and about 5-6 feet wide.

Cows like the nests for their shade and scratching abilities.

Chicks must be banded when they are of adult size and

almost ready to fly; otherwise, the band may cut

into the tarsal bone as the bird grows.

They stick out their tongues when they are stressed.

In order to calm the birds, they are placed into denim "bags";

once they have lost their sight, they calm down so that the

necessary measurements and procedures can be completed.

Antelopes like to watch.

Here is where I almost died.

Read all about it in my story, Thirsty.

The Giving of Gifts

I get such wonderful gifts!

Sis B has chosen me for one of her three HNT gift recipients. I am touched beyond measure! Read all about it here. Thank you, Sis B!

And I have received some Pocky! This was sent to me by my long-time Blogger romeo,
BOBI. It tastes like nothing I have ever tasted before. I think it could be improved only by dunking it in ginger ale.

The Pocky

The Pocky note

Thank you, BOBI!

Last but certainly not least, I have received the second installment of the Blogger Swap-o-Crap from my wonderful blogger-sister, Fritz. I won't reveal the whole package here, but here's a sneak peek:

The note that came with the Crap

Thank you, Fritz!

I hope all of you feel as loved as I do, as we enter the Eve of Christmas Eve.

White Light Thoughts

I’ve been feeling rather uncreative lately, and I just can’t force it; I don’t even feel like writing my annual Christmas letter. Maybe my creativity isn’t a bottomless well, after all. I just need to rest and let it fill up again; when it flows freely again, then I will write again.

Or maybe it’s that life is just so good right now; I don’t want to miss any of it, sitting at my computer.

Today I put up a real Christmas tree. I’ve had a fake tree for 5 or 6 years now, and I always felt like I was faking it. To compensate, I got an 8’ tree and put it up today. It smells real, it looks real, it feels real, it scratched me real. I can’t wait to decorate it. Actually, I can wait, that’s why I am writing right now.

I’ve never kissed someone that I loved on New Year’s Eve. I’ve either not been able to be with them, or been out of a relationship. I always wait around for all the couples to finish kissing, and then I get in on the second round of family & friend hugs and kisses. I don’t know why it sounds so much sadder when I write it down; I always thought I was OK with it.

Speaking of kissing … (fill in own blank here)

Nothing feels quite like hawk and eagle watching, to me. I am a serious hawk-spotter. So much so, that I am a hazard on the roads. Not really. Well, yeah. I will crane my neck to get a good look at that red-tail on the roadside branch, that soaring broadwing, that occasional bald eagle. Hell, I pull over for those. Does anyone else notice how many hawks you can see if you look? They are fierce, wild, unfettered, majestic, proud, free. They are everything that I want to be.

Sometime, I will have more to say. Right now, I just want to put on my music, decorate my tree, think about Christmas, think about New Year’s, and think about the time in between those two.

My Tag is Showing

I was tagged by TinaPoPo in … I think July … to do this fun thing! Since I blew my whole wad on the Titans post, I’ll fall back on something like this to entertain myself. Even so, I just can’t compartmentalize myself & I’ll have to put my own Spinn on it.

10 Years Ago: I was teaching high school and sharing a room with a woman who was in charge of the
Senior Homecoming Float. Hence I thought nothing of it when I saw a scrap of fabric lying in the middle of the floor.

After the students had gone, I picked it up and discovered,

Holy Schnike, this is underwear.

Holy Schnike, this is my underwear.

I had a pair of panties stuck inside my pants leg from a previous wearing, that had worked their way out onto the floor of my
classroom of sophomores. To this day I wonder at what point they were hanging, hermit-crab-like, half in/half out of my pants leg.

5 Years Ago: I jumped
off of this cliff and broke my ass. I had done several jumps/dives already from lower heights. On what turned out to be the last jump, I had climbed up about 35-40 feet, and I was scared, but a group of young Italian onlookers on the bridge high above started counting out loud. Not to back down from their Une… Due… Tre!, I took a deep breath and leapt from the cliff. It was the last time I felt good for an entire year … a year spent sitting on a rubber donut and wondering just how invasive that “realignment” procedure really might be?

1 Year Ago: I threw away something I shouldn’t have, that I needed later.

Yesterday: I learned that the gloriously verdant foliage around my
wounded mailbox

… is poison ivy.

This Posting Life

On this beautiful late afternoon, I am outside dealing with a situation and mulling things over; and by things, I specifically mean this Blog Life and how different it is from what I thought it would be. It’s better, worse, more bizarre and more real than I ever could have imagined.

My thinking is fueled, of course, by the wonderful Ode that Fritz wrote for me. Who would have thought, back in June, that a passion-filled whirlwind in Georgia would care enough about anything I had said to immortalize me in an ode? Who would have thought that I’d be driving along in my car, wondering if a redheaded, big-hearted genius in Minnesota has gotten out of bed yet?

But here I am, swinging my sledgehammer and thinking things like that. Don’t be frightened; the thinking isn’t driving the sledgehammer blows, it’s just that this idiot wasn't paying attention to his driving and … well, never mind.

When I started blogging in early July, my main mission was to vent out some things that needed venting. My early posts were a mish-mash of ire-filled rampages (since deleted, so don’t even look) that nobody read. I don’t think I was even set up for comments, at the time. Once I had finished spewing that poison to the web, I started poking around other blogs just to see what was around. I commented here and there, and started writing a few simple lists (the earliest entries that now appear) to try it out. I visited
Casual Friday, PostSecret, and BadGod. Some of my earliest readers still come around, and over time a community of regulars has evolved.

My avatar has changed a few times, and I’ve also begun to reveal more and more about myself, both at my own blog and others. Starting out, it was imperative that I keep my identity a secret. While that’s still important (I really don’t want the local PTA moms to know I used to hit the sauce and suck pebbles), what is surprising to me is that I am more and more willing to show who I truly am, and that my blog-mates accept my flaws along with my better qualities. Early on I put sort of a persona out there, one that was more abrasive and had an edgier life than the one I was actually living. I did this in the interest of protecting myself, of keeping people at arm’s length. Over time the falseness has fallen away. I tinker with the balance between revealing enough and revealing too much. So far so good. But who would have thought that I would actually begin to care? And with caring, comes the capacity for faraway people to really affect me, to influence my moods, to potentially [delight, sadden, enrapture, enrage, hurt] me.

What I struggle with is how real/unreal Blogworld is. This is the part that gets me. Behind each profile is a person with real feelings, whose life knows joys and pains that I have only the tiniest peeks at, depending upon what they choose to share. We support each other (when we feel like it) or go on our own rants. It’s really living out your life in bits & pieces. Each little bit and piece helps me take a more honest look at my own life and to see where I need to improve, how I could be better.

Fritz’s ode moved me in how it portrayed me, yes, but what moved me most is that she would even do it. I can only aspire to be a Fritz, someone who looks far enough outside herself to recognize another person’s qualities and to offer them up, shiny and polished, for the world to see. Fritz humbles me. I want to have her capacity of love for humanity.

The frustration about Blog Life not being fully real is that I crave more, and more, and more, which as we know is impossible, or at least unrealistic and generally not the way the game is played. I want to sit and drink iced tea with Heather and talk about living life as the sole survivor of triplet birth. I want to go knock on BOBI’s door and tell him to stop playing that video game and come play Lord of the Rings trivia with me!!! But no, I cannot get my own way out here, so I have a tantrum on his comments and go on my way.

Living on a blog means learning to accept that I live on other bloggers’ terms when I am off my turf.

But isn’t that how life is, anyway?

It’s not about me all the time. That’s been a hard lesson for me to absorb, because I thrive on being in the spotlight; I don’t mean to be so, I just am. Several teachers have, independently of each other, referred to me as the Pied Piper. I say “all must flock to me” only half in jest. I pull these young adults along by sheer force of my personality, charming them into loving me enough to achieve wonderful things for me. I don’t know how else to be. I want to weave a web of wonderful people all around me. What I need to remember is that each of them has a web of their own, and if I am in it, I must be attentive to them as well. It’s a daily assignment to remember that.

What on earth is my point?, I think, as I tie off the last wire in this heinous project.

Just this: That there is no way to remain removed as a blogger, at least not for me. I’m fully in it. With that, I have begun to actually care about what my readers are doing, and how they feel about what I’ve written. It’s a dangerous place to be, though, because how long can it last? Does it just go on & on (nay), or do people come and go, the way friendships peter out and fade over time (probably)? I don’t know, I’m too new at it. What I do know right now is that when there’s unrest at one blog, I feel it viscerally as I would if it was someone in my real life. When there is joy, I celebrate with you. When I’m snubbed, insulted, praised, or playfully teased, I feel all of those on my skin as if you were standing before me.

Yet only one of you knows my name.

Well, maybe two, since you two guys must talk once in a while.

So that’s how it is right now, and I don’t even really have a question. I’m just marveling, aloud, at how strange this experience is. I wouldn’t change a thing, except for slowing down just a little after the kiddies show up tomorrow, and I wear my teacher face all day.

Maybe the blogging me is really the best me. Like Glorfindel's brilliance the time Frodo saw him on the “other side”, my truest self is here in Blogland. Now if I can bring what I’ve learned here and let more and more of that light shine offline, then I will be truly and fully alive.

The World I See

Bringing my camera with me on daily errands opens my eyes to things I don't normally pay much attention to; not to mention, blogging makes me more aware of the everyday humor around me.
I love when people mess with deer-crossing signs. I've seen a deer with a rudolph-nose and another with a raging ... well, it was obviously rutting season, let's just put it that way. But this equestrian crossing takes the cake:
Sometimes I see signs that piss me off. Like this next one. Why would somebody pay mad scrilla for a big vinyl sign and not have a little help with English Grammar?!? Rule: Never use apostrophes to pluralize word's. Argh! Frustrating for my Inner Teacher Lady (shrieking, reaching for a Lorazipam).

A neighbor of mine has an interesting lawn display. Take a look:

Now let's take a closer look. There appears to be some sort of nativity action going on, though I'm not sure; those don't look similar to the pictures of Joseph and Mary in my Children's Picture Bible, but I can assume. If that's the case, then the creche holds a small swaddled babe, correct?

If there is a small, defenseless, pink, chubby baby nearby, then why is there a giant bird of prey?

He is facing the other way, mind you, but he's too close for comfort, in my opinion. Bald Eagles have amazingly strong and sharp talons; their cousin the Golden Eagle can kill a sheep with one dive to the skull.
I can only assume that Mary and Joseph are up on their raptor knowledge, and know that Bald Eagles are primarily fishing eagles, with occasional carrion meals. Hope that little bundle in the manger is alive & kicking--he'll be safe while he is.
I'd better stop while this is still true:
